The Table of hymns and
songs (excluding the Specials) On the this page is the listing of all hymns and songs that I consider capable of working on without the need for a music graphic or more detailed notes. The table includes: 1. First lines, 2. NAME OF TUNE, song title or author, 3. Playover, which lines of the verse to use (or occasionally bars/measures). Sometimes I suggest which playover lines to use from the meter; e.g. 77 77 77; play the bold sections. 4. Duration of last note and length of gap following it. Here I have suggested how long the last note should be held; this is NOT a pause. These will be kept relatively short. I then suggest the number of beats before starting the verse. But here too any silence has to be kept short as the essence of timing can disappear so easily. In some instances there is no silence at all, just a very short natural break, created by shortening the last note/chord. 5. Bridge/join. In most cases where a bridge is suggested the hymn is included in the “Specials” and included in The Complete Hymn. Very few hymn writers include bridges and in many instances they are amazingly helpful; e.g. BUNESSAN – Child in the manger, Morning has broken and Praise and Thanksgiving. If numbers are shown they represent the duration of last note and length of gap as before. I measure this in crotchets/quarter notes as used in most modern hymn books. Rarely I state these in minims/half notes or quavers/eighth notes and you will see (m) or (q) respectively beside the figures. 6. Notes. Self-explanatory.
